Cholesterol is an essential fat for the good functioning of the body. In addition to being produced by the body, cholesterol is obtained from food.
Cholesterol is carried in the bloodstream by lipoproteins. Low-density lipoproteins (LDL) carry cholesterol from the liver and intestine to muscle and organ tissues. It is the process of LDL oxidation that generates deposition of fat in arteries – atherosclerosis – and its consequences: hypertension, heart failure, angina pectoris, acute myocardial infarction, cerebral-vascular accident.
“It has been proved that olive polyphenols protect LDL from oxidation”
Hence, while traditional “cholesterol” treatments wage on lowering LDL levels, reducing effect of fat deposition, the effect of olive polyphenols (HT) is to prevent that deposition.
Mechanism
EFSA Verified Claim — 2011
“Consumption of olive oil polyphenols contributes to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative damage”
EFSA Journal 2011; 9(4):2033. Authorised when product contains at least 5 mg hydroxytyrosol and derivatives (oleuropein complex, tyrosol) per 20 g olive oil. Beneficial effect with daily intake of 20 g olive oil.
